About Sikhote-Alin Meteorites

Sikhote-Alin is classified as an Iron, IIAB-MG meteorite. At approximately 10:30am on February 12th 1947 eyewitnesses saw a bright flash and the deafening sound near the Sikhote-Alin Mountains. The large Bolide (extremely bright meteor) impacted in an area of the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, Primorye, Soviet Union. In 1957 the Soviet Union issued a stamp to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite shower. The strewn field for this meteorite covered an elliptical area of about half of a square mile.

There are basically two types of Sikhote-Alin meteorites found.

  1. Thumbprinted or Regmaglypted pieces, showing fusion crust and signs of atmospheric ablation (melting & flow lines).
  2. Shrapnel like or fragmented pieces with sharp edges that were torn apart during the atmospheric explosions or blasted apart upon impact.
