Science & History
Neptunite is a black crystal named after Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. In minerals from San Benito county, neptunite grows beautiful crystals.
Natrolite forms in a thin layer of white crystals on the surface on crossite. Benitoite and neptunite crystals can be seen on top of this bright white surface. High in sodium, this sodium aluminum silicate is a zeolite, a mineral species that can be a catalyst and exchanges ions readily.
Djurleite is a black mineral that can appear gray in reflected light. It was named in 1962 by Eugene Holloway Roseboom, Jr. in honor of Dr. Seved Djurle, professor of chemistry at University of Uppsala, Sweden.
Crossite is a greyish blue mineral in the amphibole group. It has a hardness of 6 and is a host mineral on which natrolite, neptunite, and benitoite are found.
